Solar ash platinum11/12/2022 ![]() In contrast, the coatings synthesized in low oxygen environment (monomer-rich) presented loss of mass and the coating stress changing from initially compressive to less compressive, though at a lower rate than the oxygen-rich samples. The coatings produced in oxygen-rich environment (being in turn monomer deficient) displayed a gain in mass of the coating and a change in the coating stress from initially tensile to becoming nearly three times less tensile over the first 3 weeks. We presented how the siloxane coatings of different oxidation levels produced by changing oxygen concentration during the PECVD process present a very different postdeposition behavior. In this chapter, we presented a range of dynamic effects observed in PECVD siloxane coatings fabricated in a vacuum and atmospheric pressure PECVD systems. PECVD deposition of the siloxane coatings is a complex process with the chemistry, mechanical properties, and other surface properties of the coatings being defined not only by the process parameters during fabrication but also altered dynamically after deposition. Colin Hall, in Frontiers of Nanoscience, 2019 7 Conclusions Both DLC and ALD are technologies to monitor to see if they develop into a viable technologies for barrier packaging films. While PECVD is scalable to high-speed coating suitable for packaging films, it still has its challenges. Indeed, a competing technology introduced by several firms, including Toyo Seikan Kaisha, Ltd., Toppan Printing Co., Ltd., and SIG Corpoplast GmbH Co., uses SiOx in a PECVD method to produce barrier coatings for PET bottles.Īnother drawback to DLC coatings is that they typically produce an off-color. They claim that this produces films with similar barrier performance as metalized films. Abbasa introduces Si during the coating process to reduce internal stress and pinholing. One of the limitations for using this technology for flexible films is that cracks form in the coating when the coated film is stretched by only a few percent. DLC has been used by Kirwin Brewery for PET beer bottles. Several companies have introduced technology to coat the inside of PET bottles with DLC, including Mistubishi Heavy Machinery and Sidel. The advantages of PECVD over chemical vapor deposition include lower temperatures (coatings can be made at room temperature so that the polymer substrate is not distorted), chemical stability, fewer toxic by-products, quick processing time, and high deposition rates. Such coatings are hard, scratch resistant, and have good barrier properties. PECVD can be used to produce a DLC coating.
